Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc

Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Melvyn Harrington Jr., MD, FAOA

Melvyn A. Harrington Jr, MD, is a Professor, Residency Program Director, Adult Reconstruction Fellowship Director, and a Vice Chair for Diversity and Inclusion for the Joseph Barnhart Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He is a graduate of the AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) Leadership Fellows Program and served two terms on the Diversity Advisory Board of the AAOS. He is past president of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopedic Society. Dr. Harrington served on the Executive Committee of the American Orthopaedic Association and is a member of the Council of Residency Directors™ Academic Committee. He is a member of the Steering Committee for Movement is Life Musculoskeletal Health Disparities National Caucus. Locally, he is past chair, and a member of, the Houston Leadership Board for the Arthritis Foundation. Dr. Harrington is a board- certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in arthritis and joint replacement surgery.

Statement of Need

Racial and ethnic minorities undergo fewer surgical procedures, face longer delays for necessary procedures, and have worse postoperative outcomes across surgical disciplines. This is particularly prevalent in orthopedic surgeries for debilitating musculoskeletal conditions. Despite presenting with more advanced osteoarthritis, African American patients reported longer surgical wait times when compared with White patients. This, combined with increased risk of complications and/or mortality after orthopedic surgical intervention, has led to a need for health care providers (HCPs) to improve awareness of surgical disparities in arthroplasty procedures and address interpersonal racism/biases that play a role in this health inequity.

This CMEO BriefCase episode will focus on factors for disparities in joint arthroplasty procedures and strategies clinicians can implement to improve racial equity in orthopedic arthroplasty and surgical care.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to:
