Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Cristina M. Gonzalez, MD, MEd, an alumna of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completed her internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center and her medical education research fellowship at University of Cincinnati, earning a master’s degree in medical education.  Upon completion of that fellowship, she was selected as a Scholar in the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  This prestigious four-year award launched her research program on designing, implementing, and evaluating interventions aimed at implicit bias recognition and management in clinical encounters.  She was subsequently selected as a Scholar in the Macy Faculty Scholars Program of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation to continue advancing her work.

Dr. Gonzalez is an internationally renowned expert in the development of skills-based curricular interventions in implicit bias recognition and management (IBRM) for physicians across the continuum of training and practice. In 2019, she transitioned from foundation funding and was awarded NIH funding from the National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities. This grant provides five years of funding to design and validate novel metrics facilitating future evaluation of interventions focused on IBRM with robust, clinically relevant outcome metrics. In 2022, she was selected as a Scholar in the National Academy of Medicine’s Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence program. This funding mechanism will enable her to continue her work in IBRM through the lens of equity in diagnosis. She recently joined New York University Grossman School of Medicine as a Professor of Medicine and Population Health as well as an Associate Director for the Institute for Excellence in Health Equity.

Statement of Need

In the United States, the presence of health care disparities undermines the ability for patients to access equitable, culturally respectful care, receive accurate and timely diagnoses and treatments, and achieve optimal outcomes. In order to address these disparities in care and outcomes, it is imperative that all health care practitioners (HCPs) continually engage in educational initiatives that provide historical context for disparities, challenge implicit biases, and detail actionable steps to improve patient care and outcomes for the groups most impacted by health inequities.

This CME Outfitters Snack is the foundational program of an 11-part series on culturally respectful care and addressing health care disparities. Expert faculty will engage learners in a comprehensive educational initiative that will help them to identify the various underlying root causes of disparities, integrate the practice of cultural humility into all clinical interactions, and incorporate regular self-assessment for bias into standard clinical practice to enhance the patient experience and improve outcomes.
