The road to diagnosis of narcolepsy is long, in many cases taking over 10 years. Many symptoms, specifically excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), may overlap with not only other sleep disorders, but also related comorbidities, and can confound differential diagnosis. Additionally, the diagnosis process can be complicated, and diagnostic tools may be difficult to interpret. Effective education is necessary for clinicians to identify and differentiate narcolepsy from other disorders, properly utilize and interpret diagnostic tools, and recognize when to refer patients to a sleep specialist for clinicians not specialized in sleep.
The second episode of this CMEO BriefCase series on narcolepsy focuses on distinguishing narcolepsy from other disorders, with expert faculty demonstrating how to choose, implement, and interpret screening and diagnostic tools.
Use appropriate diagnostic tools to differentiate narcolepsy from EDS associated with other medical and psychiatric disorders.
This program is supported by an independent medical education grant from Jazz Pharmaceuticals.
Sleep specialists, primary care practitioners, pulmonologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, physician associates (PAs), nurse practitioners (NPs), nurses, and pharmacists
