Pan-Viral Screening for HBV, HCV, and HIV in Diverse Practice Settings

Early detection and treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B and C (HBV, HCV) are paramount to mitigating the damage associated with these diseases, thus allowing patients to live longer, healthier lives; but many patients do not receive pan-viral screening appropriate to their risk status. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends universal testing for these viral conditions, with more frequent testing in populations at high risk of infection and during pregnancy. Awareness of current screening recommendations and integration of these recommendations into clinical practice are key to improving rates of screening for viral illnesses.

In this CME Outfitters live symposium, faculty will discuss the integration of guideline-based universal testing to address screening gaps for HIV, HBV, and HCV; evaluate pan-viral testing strategies that improve engagement in diverse practice settings; and explore strategies to incorporate guideline-recommended pan-viral and perinatal screenings into the care of patients who are pregnant to improve outcomes and limit perinatal transmission.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

• Integrate a universal testing approach in clinical practice for HBV, HCV, and HIV based on evidence-based CDC guidelines to address screening gaps
• Evaluate pan-viral testing strategies in diverse practice settings that improve engagement with patients from special populations at risk for HIV and/or viral hepatitis
• Incorporate guideline-recommended pan-viral screening approaches for patients who are pregnant to improve outcomes and limit perinatal transmission
