Dr. Ayman Al-Hendy is currently a tenured professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as advisor to the Dean of Medicine at Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago (UC). Dr. Al-Hendy is a gynecologist and endoscopic surgeon at UC Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois with a busy practice that focuses on serving women with symptomatic uterine fibroids and premature ovarian insufficiency. Dr. Al-Hendy is double board certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Al-Hendy’s medical research interests focus on developing novel therapies, including gene and stem cell therapy, for premature ovarian insufficiency, endometriosis, and particularly uterine fibroids. Dr. Al-Hendy has published more than 242 peer-reviewed publications in high-tier scientific journals, participated in more than 360 presentations in national and international meetings, and edited 5 medical books. Dr. Al-Hendy has also been elected as the 71st President of the Society for Reproductive Investigation.

Nisha McKenzie is the founder and owner of the Women’s+ Health Collective in Grand Rapids, MI. She graduated in 2002 with a master’s in medicine – Physician Assistant studies. Since that time, she has dedicated her career to women’s health, sexual health, hormones, and survivorship. Beginning in 2011, she intently focused on women’s sexual health and its relation to overall health. She completed the University of Michigan Sexual Health Certificate Program in cohort 2014. She is a Nationally Certified Menopause Practitioner and a Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health. Nisha teaches both sexual medicine and gynecology for the Grand Valley State University PA Program and the Western Michigan University PA Program. She also regularly precepts PA, NP, and medical students as well as licensed medical professionals. She speaks at medical and therapy conferences across the country with a dedication to helping providers understand how to better include sexual health into general health as well as how to break down gender bias in medicine.

Tanika Gray Valbrun

Tanika Gray Valbrun is an award-winning journalist, educator, and non-profit founder with a passion for women’s health. After her personal struggles with uterine fibroids, including two myomectomies, Tanika’s passion for women’s health inspired her to create The White Dress Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for women suffering from fibroids and to raise awareness through fibroid education. As the founder of The White Dress Project, Tanika has successfully worked with doctors, health advocates, and elected officials across the country to get legislation passed declaring July as “Fibroids Awareness Month.” Recognized as a thought leader and patient advocate for uterine health, she has also spoken around the world encouraging women to be their own best health advocate. Many women with symptomatic fibroids never dream of wearing white because of their heavy menstrual bleeding or bloating. The white dress is a “symbol of hope” that women with fibroids can feel supported and know that they do not have to suffer in silence. In addition to encouraging women to be their own health advocates, Tanika works as a senior content producer for a global news organization where she has been awarded three coveted Peabody Awards for her contributions in journalism.

Statement of Need

Similar to many gynecologic conditions, there is stigma and embarrassment associated with the symptoms of uterine fibroids, and seeking treatment can be difficult. This difficulty is compounded when racial and ethnic discrimination and health care disparities are taken into account. It is imperative that clinicians, both specialist and primary care, effectively utilize shared decision-making (SDM) to explore the impact of the treatments they select for patients with uterine fibroids. Plan development should focus on long-term considerations, including fertility, sexual health, disease management, financial impact, mental wellness, quality of life, racial/ethnic disparities, and mitigating risk factors/potential side effects.

In the final activity of this CME Outfitters Snack series, expert faculty will help learners to identify opportunities to integrate effective and inclusive SDM into their clinical practice and implement patient-centered treatment plans for patients with uterine fibroids.
