There is great importance to discussing HIV with patients of child-bearing age, and discussing HIV treatment and potential perinatal transmission with patients living with HIV who are considering or have become pregnant, given that perinatal transmission may be vastly minimized. Obstetrician/Gynecologists (OB/GYNs) play a key role in reducing HIV perinatal transmission in the care and guidance they provide their patients, including those in underserved populations with increased risk of HIV. To assist these providers, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has provided guidelines on how to provide perinatal care to patients with or at risk of contracting HIV along with prophylaxis treatment available to infants. Providing education on these guidelines to OB/GYNs and other members of the multidisciplinary team caring for individuals with or at risk for HIV will help these individuals achieve and maintain viral suppression and greatly reduce the risk of perinatal transmission of HIV .
In this CME Outfitters Snack, expert faculty, including OB/GYNs, will address the educational needs of providers who care for patients with or at risk for HIV, explaining how to discuss HIV risk with patients and the latest guideline-based care and recommendations for those with or at risk of HIV considering pregnancy or who are currently pregnant.
