In 2016 the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain was released with the goal of reducing rates of opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose and encouraging use of effective opioid-alternatives for the management of chronic pain. In the first and second year following the Guidelines’ release, total day’s supply for opioid prescriptions were reduced by 4.7% and 9.8%, respectively, compared to the pre-Guideline period. However, misinterpretation and misapplication of guideline recommendations continues to pose health equity challenges and add frustration to patient-provider relationships. Updates to the aforementioned CDC Guidelines have been drafted to address these remaining barriers to safe, effective, and equitable pain management and will be released in late 2022.
In this recorded Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) webcast, faculty will review anticipated updates to the Guidelines and discuss how best to incorporate these updates into practice. The activity will also examine the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms of pain, the identification and management of OUD, and strategies for educating patients about their pain and pain treatment options.
