Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc

Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Charles Vega, MD, FAAFP

Charles Vega, MD grew up in Northern California and completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard University. He attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin Madison and completed residency training in Family Medicine at University of California Irvine (UCI). He remained as faculty in the Department of Family Medicine at UCI and now holds the title of Health Sciences Clinical Professor. He is the Executive Director of UCI’s Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community and won a Macy Faculty Scholarship to improve patient-centered health education at UCI. He currently serves as Assistant Dean for Culture and Community Education in the UCI School of Medicine.

Dr. Vega has seen patients and taught medical students and residents at UCI Health Family Health Center, Santa Ana for the past 20 years. This clinic is a federally qualified health center and the largest safety-net clinic for Orange County. Dr. Vega’s academic interests are focused on access to quality, compassionate medical care for underserved populations, and the development of training programs to promote this vision of healthcare.

Monica Vela, MD, FACP

Monica Vela, MD recently joined the University of Illinois College of Medicine as Professor of Medicine and Director of the Hispanic Center of Excellence. She also serves as Associate Editor for JAMA Network Open. She is the former Associate Vice Chair for Diversity and Associate Dean at University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She has spent the last 16 years directing a required course for first year medical students entitled, “Health Disparities: Equity and Advocacy,” which provides a structural competency foundation and advocacy training. Her coursework is the only course in the extant literature shown to improve diversity of the medical school applicants and improve the cultural climate among medical students.

Dr. Vela has been selected by Pritzker students for a Favorite Faculty Award 9 times since 2010 for her teaching. Her research spans medical education on health disparities and care of limited-English proficiency patients, as well as diversity in the medical profession. In 2012, she won the American College of Physician’s National Award for Diversity and Access to Care. In 2014, she was awarded the Society of General Internal Medicine National Herbert Nickens Award for Diversity and Minority Health as well as the inaugural Alpha Omega Alpha Fellow in Leadership Award. Also that year, she was awarded the University of Chicago Distinguished Faculty Award for Community Service. She was awarded the 2019 University of Chicago Diversity Leadership Award and was honored during the University’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration.

Statement of Need

The United States comprises a diverse landscape of viewpoints and beliefs, religious practices, cultures, and peoples. Despite the continual growth of the country’s diverse profile, racial and ethnic underserved populations are disproportionately impacted by cultural ignorance, disparities, and health inequities. Without adopting and actively incorporating cultural humility into daily practices and interactions with patients, the medical community lacks the ability to provide safe places in which patients are able to access culturally respectful medical care, deteriorating the patient experience and compromising patient outcomes.

In this CME Outfitters webcast, expert faculty will discuss the principles of cultural humility and awareness, impact of unconscious and implicit bias, and critical importance of self-evaluation, personal accountability, and continual learning to enhance medical care and patient outcomes. This webcast will provide actionable strategies to promote change within the provider and the practice, laying the foundation to improve health equity.

Learning Objectives

  • Outline the impact of both cultural humility and reduced implicit bias on patient experience.
  • Adopt self-evaluation, self-reflection, and cultural awareness practices to improve interactions with patients, caregivers, and the care team.
  • Integrate actionable learning strategies continually into practice to promote positive change and enhance delivery of care in patient interactions.
