Dr. Ayman Al-Hendy is currently a tenured professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as advisor to the Dean of Medicine at Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago (UC). Dr. Al-Hendy is a gynecologist and endoscopic surgeon at UC Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois with a busy practice that focuses on serving women with symptomatic uterine fibroids and premature ovarian insufficiency. Dr. Al-Hendy is double board certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Al-Hendy’s medical research interests focus on developing novel therapies, including gene and stem cell therapy, for premature ovarian insufficiency, endometriosis, and particularly uterine fibroids. Dr. Al-Hendy has published more than 242 peer-reviewed publications in high-tier scientific journals, participated in more than 360 presentations in national and international meetings, and edited 5 medical books. Dr. Al-Hendy has also been elected as the 71st President of the Society for Reproductive Investigation.

Dr. Andrea Lukes established the Carolina Women’s Research and Wellness Center in 2008. She received her bachelor’s degree in religion from Duke University, followed by a combined medical degree and master’s degree in biostatistics from Duke University. After completing her residency at University of North Carolina, she worked at Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) for 10 years. While at DUMC, Dr. Lukes co-founded and served as the Director of Gynecology for the Women’s Hemostasis and Thrombosis Clinic. She has participated in research programs supported by the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and has conducted multiple industry-sponsored US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) trials. Since 2017, Dr. Lukes has also served as the Chief Medical Officer at a woman-focused clinical research organization in Durham, North Carolina. She continues to actively consult with industry regarding the development and implementation of research protocols, including communications and presentations to the FDA. To date, she has participated in over 130 FDA-approved clinical studies.

Statement of Need

There are various treatment options for uterine fibroids, however, despite their high prevalence and significant impact on patient quality of life, little data exists to formulate evidence-based management guidelines. Uterine fibroid treatment can include a variety of medical and surgical interventions. Treatment strategies should be individualized to each patient based on the location and size of fibroids, severity of symptoms, age, desire for future fertility, and proximity to menopause. It is imperative that clinicians have a strong understanding of all treatment options to best partner with their patients on the creation of personalized management plans.

In the third activity of this CME Outfitters Snack series, expert faculty will provide an overview of the various treatment options for uterine fibroids and help learners to integrate clinical management guidelines for this condition into clinical practice.
