Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc

Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Antonia F. Chen, MD, MBA, is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and the Director of Arthroplasty Research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She was the Associate Director of Research at the Rothman Institute, an Associate Professor at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, and the Director of Medical Education Curriculum, Musculoskeletal Studies at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. She received her BS from Yale University and MD from Rutgers Medical School, where she graduated with Distinction in Research and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Chen received her MBA from Rutgers Business School and is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. She completed her orthopaedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh and fellowship in hip and knee arthroplasty at the Rothman Institute. She is a member of the Knee Society and the first female surgeon in the Hip Society. She is on the editorial board of 8 journals and is Past President of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society. She has won multiple research awards, presented all over the world, and authored over 300 publications, 45 book chapters, and 4 books.

Statement of Need

Proper therapeutic and surgical interventions in conjunction with adequate pain management play crucial roles in determining the quality of life (QoL) of patients with joint health care needs. Patients in racial and ethnic underserved communities endure the systemic effects of unconscious biases and historical and structural racism and as such, health care providers (HCPs) need to be cognizant of their interactions with patients when assessing joint health and joint arthroplasty. Education, chronic disease, economic stability, social support systems, and environmental factors all play into a patient’s individual needs in the context of joint health care, and providers must consider all these factors when engaging with the patient and developing holistic treatment goals in partnership with patients. It is critical that providers do a thorough history to understand how a patient’s occupation, burden of chronic diseases, and lack of social support may impact joint health and post-surgical outcomes.

In this podcast installment of a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) series, Drs. Peek and Chen will discuss strategies vital to combating biases and inequities in joint health care. This engaging discussion will discuss modern day issues that need addressed to ensure equitable health care and the faculty will provide real-world action steps to improve joint health care for all patients.

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to analyze the influence of unconscious bias, health disparities, and health inequities on joint health care.
