Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc

Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Adam Ramsey, OD, is a Florida Board Certified Optometrist and owner of Socialite Vision in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. His private practices highlight cutting edge technology, innovative eye care, and optical services. Born in Trinidad and raised in South Florida, Dr. Ramsey gleaned his passion for social and civil camaraderie during his formative years. His fondness for community-focused initiatives has made him a sought-after speaker and presenter for local and national health fairs and career symposiums. Professionally, Dr. Ramsey is also a nationally recognized speaker and Advisory Board Member for Neurolens, Bausch and Lomb, Zeiss, Kala, 20/20 On-Site, Novartis, and Seacoast Bank along with numerous others. In 2019, Dr. Ramsey headlined a community engagement series entitled “Dinner with The Doctor.”

Dr. Ramsey graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis in 2012. One year later, he opened Iconic Eye Care in Lake Park, Florida, which he rebranded as Socialite Vision in 2016. Dr. Ramsey compiled the ebbs and flows of his experience as an optometrist into his 2020 debut work, Play Chess Not Checkers: The Practical Guide to Warm Start Your Dream Optometric Practice. In his book, Dr. Ramsey gives aspiring optometrists and entrepreneurs alike step-by-step guidelines for opening a successful practice, coupled with personal life lessons to endure and how to overcome the test and trials of new business ownership.

In his practice, Dr. Ramsey specializes in Myopia Control, Dry Eye Care, and Advanced Contact Lens Fittings. Dr. Ramsey was the previous Vice President of T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society and Chairman of the Board for the Palm Beach County Optometric Association. Some of his accolades include the 2021 Cooper Vision Practice of Excellence, 2020 Eye Care Business Game Changer of the Year, Florida Optometric Association 2020 Local Society Member of the Year, 2018 Small Business of the Year Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Palm Beaches, and 2018 Business of the Year Award from Legacy Magazine.

Dr. Ramsey cites his belief in being fiercely independent as the driving motivation in his life and professional career. “I stand on the shoulders of giants and consider it my duty to keep this legacy alive,” says Dr. Ramsey.

Ruth Y. Shoge, OD, MPH, FAAO, isan Associate Clinical Professor and the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) at the University of California, Berkeley Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), where she also completed a residency in Pediatrics and Vision Therapy. She received her Master of Public Health from Temple University with a concentration in Social and Behavioral Science. During that time, she developed a special interest in using cultural humility and bias awareness as tools to address eyecare disparities and inequities to improve health outcomes in historically marginalized communities. She has been involved in several national initiatives to improve policies and practices within the eyecare profession. Additionally, she started her own consulting company, RYS Consultants LLC, to provide educational opportunities and long-term DEIB planning for academic, private, and corporate settings, and practitioners and student members of the optometric community.

Dr. Shoge’s clinical interests include pediatric primary care, non-strabismic binocular vision disorders, vision disorders related to concussion, and vision therapy. In the clinical setting, Dr. Shoge aims to provide and model clinical competence and cultural humility to her students as they care for their patients. She has served as an investigator in several federally-funded research studies and has had the opportunity to present nationally and internationally about binocular vision, vision therapy, the management of concussion-related vision disorders, and clinical cultural humility and bias-awareness training.

Statement of Need

The standard of vision care greatly affects the quality of life (QoL) for patients with vision needs, and clinicians need to carefully consider their interactions with patients when prescribing and assessing patients’ vision, while also unlearning unconscious bias and the historical structural racism within vision care norms. Education, health care, economic stability, social and community context, and neighborhood/environmental factors all play into a patient’s individual needs in the context of vision care, and providers must consider all these factors when engaging with the patient and developing holistic treatment goals in partnership with patients.

In this podcast installment of a multi-prong diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) series, Drs. Peek, Ramsey, and Shoge will discuss strategies vital to combating inequities in vision care. The conversation will describe modern day issues in how unconscious bias, health disparities, and health inequities all influence quality of care and provide real-world action steps to improve vision care for all patients.
