Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc

Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Dr. Turnquest is a private practice general and bariatric surgeon practicing in the northwest Houston area for 22 years. He has served the medical community during this time in numerous capacities; he serves as the regional Medical Director for bariatrics at HCA Gulf Coast region, Medical Director for bariatrics at HCA Northwest and Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospitals, and as a member of the board of directors at TOPS Surgical Specialty Hospital. Dr. Turnquest has served as Chairman of the board at his primary hospital, Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery, Chair of the Bariatric Committee and Trauma Committee as well as quality, collaborative practice, bylaws, and various ad hoc duties. Dr. Turnquest is an active member of the Harris County Medical Society (HCMS), where he currently serves on the Executive Board as the 4th year member-at-large, Chair of the HCMS Survey Committee, delegate to the Texas Medical Association, Chairman of the Board of Houston Academy of Medicine Education, and Research Roundation, and President of Houston Academy of Medicine. He has previously held positions as President of the HCMS Northwest branch, Communications Chair, Boards of Medical Legislation, Socioeconomics, and Trauma/EMS Committees as well.

Dr. Turnquest is married to his beautiful bride, Tyra, and enjoys his two children, Krysti and Jordan.

Statement of Need

Structural racism and systemic barriers to health care access can lead to increased risk and burden in surgical weight-loss procedures. Twenty-four states and the District of Columbia report a 35% or higher prevalence rate of obesity in non-Hispanic Black adults. It is well established that obesity contributes to worse health outcomes. In order to mitigate disparities and ensure access to surgical weight-loss procedures, it is imperative that health care providers (HCPs) are aware of their own implicit/explicit biases about candidacy for weight loss treatment or bariatric surgery. Similarly, there is a need to develop interprofessional team approaches to care in order to improve on both preventative and follow-up care in patients with obesity.

This CMEOCast podcast will focus on the negative impact of inequitable access on surgical weight-loss procedures, including the key contributing factors for disparities in weight-loss surgery and strategies for mitigating these disparities.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Assess key contributing factors for health care disparities in surgical weight-loss procedures.
  • Identify strategies to mitigate racial and ethnic disparities in surgical weight-loss procedures and outcomes.
