Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc

Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Haydée C. Brown, MD is a nationally recognized orthopaedic surgeon, social justice advocate, and former semi-professional dancer who practices in New York City. Dr. Brown is a graduate of Wellesley College and the NYU School of Medicine. She currently serves as an Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem and as an Associate Clinical Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery at Mount Sinai Health System.

In 2020, she volunteered in a South Bronx Emergency Room, assisting COVID-19 patients. In the same year, she founded Black Women Orthopaedic Surgeons, an organization dedicated to empowering Black women in the field.

In 2021, Dr. Brown took the helm of the Orthopaedic Surgery Service at Harlem Hospital. During her tenure, Dr Brown reconstructed the service, recruiting six Black and Brown orthopaedic surgeons to provide comprehensive musculoskeletal care to the Harlem Community. These fellowship-trained surgeons formed one of the largest Black and Brown orthopaedic groups in the USA.

Proud mom to a young son, Dr. Brown resides in Harlem. When she’s not caring for patients or working to make the world a better place, she enjoys dancing, her Peloton+, family time, and running.

Statement of Need

Disparities in joint health, including access to orthopedic care and rates of surgical intervention for disabling osteoarthritis, exist among racial and ethnic underserved and underrepresented populations. To establish equitable joint health care, it is critical not only to understand the role that race, bias, and social determinants of health education play but also to implement standardized screening, empathy, cultural sensitivity, and personalized care.

In this CME Outfitters BriefCase, Drs. Peek and Brown will guide learners through a patient case scenario reflective of the impact of biases, disparities, and health inequities that reduce the quality of joint health care for racial and ethnic underserved patients. This program will provide actionable strategies, empowering attendees to recognize factors that contribute to care inequities and implement changes in practice to improve access to tools and treatment for patients with joint health concerns.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the impact of health inequities on patients with joint health concerns.
  • Individualize treatment strategies that include assessment of SDoH for optimal outcomes in patients with joint pain.
