Statement of Need

To provide equitable obesity care, caregivers must challenge the common misperception of obesity as the result of character flaws; instead, they must recognize obesity as a chronic disease with genetic, socioeconomic, and cultural components. Implicit bias, the oftentimes subconscious misperceptions of caregivers towards patients, in the case of obesity can lead to culturally insensitive care and misdiagnosis of serious conditions, ultimately leading to disparities in overall health and care for these patients. In contrast, a patient-centric approach to obesity care requires caregivers to individualize care based on patient goals, preferences, culture, socioeconomic background, and genetic history. When caregivers can coordinate with a multidisciplinary team to address individual barriers to healthy lifestyles for each patient while incorporating shared decision-making strategies, obesity care can truly be equitable for all patients.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, part of a series on health access, social responsibility, and obesity care, expert faculty will identify the complex factors contributing to obesity as a chronic disease, including genetic, socioeconomic, and cultural influences, and discuss how to implement multidisciplinary, patient-centered, shared decision-making strategies to individualize care and combat barriers to equity in obesity care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to better:

  • Identify the complex factors contributing to obesity as a chronic disease, including genetic, socioeconomic, and cultural influences
  • Implement patient-centered, shared decision-making strategies to individualize care, and address barriers to equity in care
