Statement of Need

Individuals who are neurodiverse can bring unique skills to the workforce; however, discrimination, implicit bias, and stigma exist. To ease stress for these individuals, health care professionals (HCPs) and employers can foster inclusivity by realizing that each person is different and that in many ways we are all neurodiverse. Being inclusive through predictable schedules, noise-canceling headphones, and assistive tools such as text-to-speech software can help many employees be more productive. It is also essential to implement strategies that include creating sensory-friendly spaces, adopting a “respond-versus-react” approach, and providing clear communication. Additionally, because caregivers of individuals with neurodiversity often face intense stress, it is crucial to foster a safe space for disclosure and collaboration. By promoting patience, kindness, and grace, HCPs and employers can create a more equitable health care and workplace environment.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, part of a series on health access, social responsibility, and neurodiversity, expert faculty will identify methods to create inclusive workplace environments for individuals who are neurodiverse and will develop communication strategies to facilitate interprofessional collaboration when caring for patients who are neurodiverse.
