Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Ricardo Correa, MD, EdD, FACE, FACP, FACMQ, is an Associate Professor of Medicine; the Program Director for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship; and the Director for Diversity in Graduate Medical Education at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. Dr. Correa also serves as Staff Clinician and Researcher at Phoenix VA Medical Center (VAMC) and Health Equity Fellowship Director for the Creighton School of Medicine in Phoenix.

He completed medical school and a master’s in education at the University of Panama as well as a research fellowship in Epidemiology and Tropical Disease at Gorgas Commemorative Institute of Health Studies (ICGE) in Panama City. Since medical school, Dr. Correa has been involved with local, regional, and national organizations around medical education, leadership, and physician wellbeing, including the AMA Joy in Medicine organization, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), American Board Of Internal Medicine (ABIM), American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), and Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Dr. Correa has been involved in multiple academic, scientific, and educational activities. He is board-certified in Medical Quality and authored the book Case Report: Basics and Publication. His research focuses on neuroendocrinology, mainly on pituitary/adrenal tumor and steroid secretion problems as well as health care disparities in diabetes in Latinx populations.

He is the Medical Director of an endo and diabetes clinic he established in an underserved area of Phoenix. Dr. Correa has been recognized with several honors, including Presidential Leadership Scholar, 100 Hispanic Inspiring Scientists, National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) 40 Under 40, Humanitarian award by Arizona Medical Association, Medscape Rising Star, Eric Nilsen Award from Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), and Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Herbert W. Nickens Minority Health and Representation in Medicine Award.

He enjoys playing the saxophone, hiking in the Phoenix Mountain with his family, and traveling to other countries to learn about the different cultures.

Statement of Need

In the United States, the overall prevalence of obesity in adults has persistently increased over the last two decades up to 41.9% in 2020, and certain racial and ethnic underserved populations are disproportionately impacted by this disease. It is imperative that clinicians recognize the root causes and the impacts of health inequities in patients diagnosed with obesity and utilize this knowledge to create individualized, holistic treatment plans with the goal of improving outcomes in obesity care.

In this CME Outfitters BriefCase, we will follow Maria, a 52-year-old Latina woman who has been diagnosed with obesity and type 2 diabetes, as she navigates the healthcare system seeking respectful and holistic medical care. Expert faculty will discuss the nuances of the case and will highlight the importance of recognizing not only the healthcare disparities related to obesity in general, but also the intersectional impact that obesity can have on preexisting racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the impact of health inequities on obesity care.
  • Individualize a holistic treatment plan for obesity care to improve patient outcomes.
