Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Ramirez is deeply involved in disability advocacy. Within the Mount Sinai Health System and the broader community, she passionately participates in disability awareness initiatives, tirelessly promotes healthcare access, and advocates for improving health disparities. Her professional and personal experiences have shaped her into a dedicated Clinical Researcher with a passion for making a positive impact on healthcare and disability advocacy.

Statement of Need

Patients with disabilities, especially those with complex social determinants of health, are underserved by a health care system they find unwelcoming and difficult to navigate. Most doctors, nurses, and patient-facing staff do not receive disability-related training, and many lack confidence in their ability to provide the same quality of care, overall, to patients with disabilities. As a result, clinical outcomes suffer, and patients feel unheard, misunderstood, and rejected. About 67 million adults in the United States have a disability, thus the negative impact of these gaps in care is significant. This translates to more than a quarter of the population facing limited access to primary care, ineffective/insufficient consultation, and poor disease management when they are suffering and at their most vulnerable.

In this CMEO Snack, expert faculty will guide learners through a discussion of the unique care barriers and facilitators and their impact on individuals with disabilities as well as strategies for clinical practice that address the health-related social needs of these patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the unique health-related social needs of individuals with disabilities and their impact on clinical care practices.
  • Incorporate strategies into clinical practice to address the health-related social needs of individuals with disabilities and reduce ableism.

This program is supported by an independent medical education grant from CVS Health.
