Rakesh Jain, MD, MPH, is a Clinical Professor in the department of Psychiatry at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine – Permian Basin in Midland, Texas and in private practice in Austin, Texas. Dr. Jain attended medical school at the University of Calcutta in India. He received his Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, where he was awarded a National Institute/Center for Disease Control Competitive Traineeship. His research thesis focused on the impact of substance abuse.

Dr. Jain completed his residency in psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in research psychiatry at the University of Texas Mental Sciences Institute in Houston. He was awarded the National Research Service Award in support of his postdoctoral fellowship.

Dr. Jain has been involved in over 100 research projects studying the effects of medications on short-term and long-term treatment of depression, anxiety, pain/mood overlap disorders, ADHD, and psychosis in adult and child/adolescent populations. He has presented at the World Psychiatric Congress held in Prague, and at Depression and Pain Forum meetings internationally. He is the author of 55 articles published in various journals and magazines, such as the Journal of Psychiatric Research and  Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, among others, and has presented over 25 original research posters at meetings such as the American Psychological Association (APA), the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP), the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the U.S. Psychiatric Congress, and more. He has co-authored six books that range from patient education to cutting-edge neurobiologic findings in psychiatry and mental health. He serves on several advisory boards focusing on drug development and disease state education. He was also recently the Chair of the U.S. Psychiatric Congress, and for several years, has served as a member of the Steering Committee for U.S. Psychiatric Annual Congress. He is a recipient of the Public Citizen of the Year award from the National Association of Social Workers, Gulf Coast Chapter, in recognition of his community and peer education, and championing of mental health issues.

Diane Bruessow, PA-C, divides her time between practicing and teaching medicine. She is the Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and an Assistant Professor adjunct at the Yale School of Medicine PAO program, where she teaches the next generation of medical professionals about sexual and gender minority health. Her medical practice, Healthy Transitions, LLC, is dedicated to the care of transgender and nonbinary patients across the lifespan.

Dr. Tiffany is a Board-Certified Emergency Physician who has served in busy emergency departments and provided prehospital care as well as remote care since 2007. A transwoman currently transitioning herself, she is the first open trans woman Emergency Physician in Louisiana. She is a business owner who owns her clinic, Butterfly Medical Care, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She practices acute care, primary care, LGBTQ care, and gender-affirming care there and via telehealth throughout the state. Her experience in remote medical direction led her to begin practicing transgender medicine via telemedicine, as making it accessible to all, even in isolated locations, is something she cares deeply about. She received her medical degree at the University of North Texas in Fort Worth and completed her emergency medicine residency at LSU New Orleans (Charity Hospital) and EMS fellowship with New Orleans EMS. She has been part of the teaching staff at Ochsner in New Orleans and St. Francis in Monroe and has a passion for medical education. She still actively instructs medical students at her clinic. Her non-medical interests include amateur storm chasing, writing, all things social, and she is a fierce advocate for public health, trans rights, women’s rights, and LGBTQ issues through her sizable online platforms.

Statement of Need

Transgender and non-binary individuals face overt discrimination and outright hostility in daily life, and the health care setting is not always a safe, welcoming place for these patients. This collective stigmatizing, invalidating, and traumatizing experience contributes to poor health outcomes for these individuals, including a disproportionate burden of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation and attempts. One low-effort, low-cost way to begin improving the care experience for transgender and non-binary patients is for clinicians and staff to ask for and use each patient’s preferred personal pronouns. This modest effort, when accompanied by empathetic communication and behavior, can begin to improve the experience for transgender and non-binary individuals and can encourage them to seek care proactively.

This educational presentation features health care experts who will share actionable strategies for incorporating the use of personal pronouns into clinical practice to foster a safe and inclusive care environment.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 0.75 medical knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity.
