Atul Malhotra, MD, is a pulmonary critical and sleep medicine physician at University of California San Diego (UCSD). He is a research chief and endowed professor of respiratory medicine as well as a former president of the American Thoracic Society. While running a large National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded laboratory and being active clinically, he has published 455 original manuscripts plus 300 reviews/chapters since 2000.

Statement of Need

The therapeutic armamentarium for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)-associated excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is limited, with few new therapies on the horizon. With just three therapies currently indicated for these patients, health care professionals (HCPs) are tasked with developing personalized and effective dosing and titration strategies for patients with OSA-associated EDS that consider patient behaviors, comorbidities, drug-drug interactions, and more—like in our patient,  Alvin, who is stable and has had some improvement after 8 months on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment but still has some difficulty with EDS.

Join us for this third of three BriefCase activities in which our expert faculty interweaves foundational knowledge with exercises for HCPs to practice new learnings with a case that emulates a patient with OSA and EDS seen in clinical practice.

Learning Objective

Develop real-world dosing and titration strategies that personalize treatment for optimal outcomes in patients with EDS associated with OSA.

Financial Support

Supported by an educational grant from Axsome.

Target Audience

Sleep specialists, neurologists, psychiatrists, pulmonologists, primary care practitioners, nurse practitioners (NPs), physician associates (PAs), and pharmacists
