With the advancement of treatments for people living with HIV (PLWH), having a longer lifespan requires clinicians to balance treatment for HIV with other comorbid or chronic conditions associated with aging. For example, people aging with HIV (PAWH) show higher risks of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancers compared to those without HIV. It is common for PAWH to follow multiple medication treatments (polypharmacy) for their HIV and other chronic conditions. Clinicians treating PAWH need to understand the interactions of the conditions, the polypharmacy or various medications prescribed, and work with one another as a team to best treat these patients and meet their unique health care needs.
This CMEO BriefCase entitled, Team Approach to Addressing Comorbidities in Aging Populations of People Living With HIV (PLWH), will discuss a specific case of an individual facing the challenges of living with HIV and having other comorbid or chronic conditions as a matter of aging. Expert faculty will discuss a team-based approach to caring for PAWH, including how to balance the various treatments and polypharmacy for HIV and other common conditions associated with aging.
Utilize team-based interdisciplinary care to optimize HIV and comorbidity outcomes in aging patients.
This program has been supported by an independent educational grant from Gilead Sciences, Inc.
