Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc

Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

She is the Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and an Assistant Professor adjunct at the Yale School of Medicine PAO program, where she teaches the next generation of medical professionals about sexual and gender minority health. Her medical practice, Healthy Transitions, LLC, is dedicated to the care of transgender and nonbinary patients across the lifespan.

Dr. Lisa Richardson is a physician in General Internal Medicine at the University Health Network and is a Centre Researcher at the Wilson Centre with a scholarly focus on the integration of Indigenous and critical perspectives from the social sciences into medical education.  Dr. Richardson is the Associate Dean, Inclusion and Diversity at Temerty Medicine and is the Strategic Lead in Indigenous Health for Women’s College Hospital where she founded the Centre for Wise Practices in Indigenous Health.

Statement of Need

Health care disparities undermine the ability for patients to receive timely and accurate diagnoses, access to optimal treatments, and achievement of best possible outcomes. Each patient’s journey is inherently tied to their surrounding circumstances, including individual social determinants of health (SDoH), geographic location, as well as structural racism and systemic bias in the medical community. Such factors lead to health inequities and impact the patient experience throughout their care journey and ultimately impact their health outcome.

In this CME Outfitters webcast, expert faculty will discuss unconscious bias, racial and ethnic disparities, and health inequities and lay the foundation to implement real-world strategies and actionable steps for health care professionals (HCPs) and non-HCPs, including office, administrative, and support staff. This webcast will also integrate the patient perspective and allow learners to recognize how patients are impacted throughout their care and best practices that can improve care and outcomes for all.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Analyze racial and ethnic disparities resulting in health inequities in patient care.
  • Develop a team-based approach to improve the patient experience during visits.
  • Determine treatment based on SDoH to improve accessibility and success of patient care and outcomes.

ABIM MOC 2.0

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 2.0 medical knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

MIPS Improvement Activity

Completion of this accredited CME activity meets the expectations of an Accredited Safety or Quality Improvement Program (IA_PSPA_28) for the Merit-based Incentive Payment Program (MIPS).
