Vaccinations for illnesses such as influenza and COVID-19 may be the best means for prevention and further spread of disease, yet, the rate of vaccination in the US often falls short of health care goals. For example, the CDC lists the goal for influenza vaccination to be 70% of the population, but each flu season, actual rates are closer to 50%. Additionally, the vaccination rates for particular racial/ethnic underserved populations tend to be lower than rates of non-Hispanic White populations, creating a unique challenge for helping underserved populations become vaccinated. Vaccine hesitancy and access to vaccinations are potential reasons for vaccination disparities and must be addressed if we are to meet our health care vaccination goals for all patients.
This CMEO BriefCase will discuss the health care challenges of a racially diverse young mother and her 2-year-old child, and how to encourage vaccinations as preventative measures for both. Expert faculty will discuss potential barriers and hesitancies for this mother to vaccinate herself and her child, along with strategies to ameliorate disparities in vaccination rates.
