Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc

Monica Peek, MD, MPH, MSc is an Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director, Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and Director of Research, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She is a practicing internist, medical educator, and clinician investigator. Her research pursues health equity and social justice, with a focus on promoting equitable doctor/patient relationships among racial minorities, integrating the medical and social needs of patients, and addressing health care discrimination and structural racism impacting health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, COVID-19). Dr. Peek has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts on health care disparities, diversity, and bias; has been the principal investigator of multiple grants to address health disparities; and has been invited to speak at numerous local and national medical meetings.

Caroline Fisher, MD, is a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford University Hospital and Clinics in Palo Alto, California. She specializes in cataract and glaucoma surgery, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.

She completed her undergraduate education at Stanford University, obtaining both a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish, with Departmental Honors. Dr. Fisher earned her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and then went on to intern at the University of Pennsylvania Presbyterian Hospital. She completed her ophthalmology residency at New York University (NYU)/Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. She then returned to Stanford for her Glaucoma Fellowship.

Dr. Fisher is Director of the Stanford Belize Vision Clinic, dedicated to promoting eye health and care in Belize and providing an international rotation for Stanford Ophthalmology Residents. She is also an Office of Faculty Development and Diversity Liaison and is currently one of the Stanford Network for Advancement and Promotion (SNAP) Cohort Leaders. Dr. Fisher is the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Department of Ophthalmology.

Statement of Need

The impact of disparities in vision care is widespread—from lower test scores in school children to macular degeneration in the aging population. Gaps in early diagnosis, treatment options and access, preservation of eyesight, and more, remain for racial and ethnic underserved populations. A culmination of biases, disparities, and inequities continues a cycle of inadequate optometric and ophthalmological care, thus resulting in delayed diagnosis and suboptimal clinical management and prognosis.

In this CME Outfitters BriefCase, faculty experts will guide learners through patient case scenarios reflecting the impact of biases, disparities, and health inequities that reduce the quality of vision care for racial and ethnic underserved patients. This program will provide actionable strategies, empowering attendees to identify factors and implement changes in practice to improve vision treatment.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to recognize the impact of health inequities on vision care and individualize treatment strategies that include assessment of SDoH to improve patient outcomes.
