Cardiometabolic risk factors, including elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting blood glucose and A1c, dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and elevated BMI, contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease as well as diabetes. In the United States, cardiometabolic risk factors have been increasing in prevalence across the population over the last two decades, with a disproportionate impact on people from racial and ethnic underserved populations. It is imperative that clinicians understand the root causes of these disparities and recognize the pervasive impact they have on cardiometabolic care.
In this CME Outfitters Snack, expert faculty will review current data underscoring the existence of racial and ethnic disparities within cardiometabolic care, as well as how systemic racism and social determinants of health contribute to these health disparities. They will also provide actionable steps for clinicians to take to achieve more equitable care within the field of cardiology.
At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to illustrate the pervasive impact of bias and disparities on persons with cardiometabolic disorders.
