Statement of Need

The United States has the highest rate of maternal mortality among economically developed nations, and this rate of maternal mortality notably worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though awareness and recognition of disparities within maternal health have increased in recent years, persistent racial and ethnic disparities in both maternal morbidity and mortality remain. It is imperative that clinicians understand the root causes of these disparities and recognize the pervasive impact they have on maternal care.

In this CME Outfitters Snack, expert faculty will guide viewers through a thorough review of current data underscoring the existence of racial and ethnic disparities within maternal care, as well as how social determinants of health and systemic racism contribute to these health disparities. They will also provide actionable steps for clinicians to take to achieve more equitable care within the field of maternal health.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to illustrate the pervasive impact of bias and disparities on pregnant and postpartum people.
