In the United States, the overall prevalence of obesity has persistently increased over the last two decades, and underserved patients diagnosed with obesity are disproportionately impacted. It is important to recognize not only the health care disparities related to obesity, but also the intersectional impact that obesity can have on preexisting racial and ethnic disparities. It is imperative that clinicians understand the root causes of these disparities and recognize the pervasive impact they have on obesity care.
In this CME Outfitters Snack, expert faculty will guide learners through a review of current data underscoring the existence of racial and ethnic disparities within obesity care, as well as how systemic racism and social determinants of health contribute to these health disparities. They will also provide actionable steps for clinicians to take to achieve more equitable care within the field of obesity.
At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to illustrate the pervasive impact of bias and disparities on the care of patients with obesity.
